The Daruma-ki Ceremony was held on Friday, October 5th. Roshi attended the ceremony and gave a heart-felt talk. It was a true pleasure to see and hear him once again. He assured the group that he is going to be around for a while and he is working on planning for the future of the Shanga.

October Weekend Zazenkai
Weekend Zazenkai followed the Daruma-ki ceremony, the weekend of October 5 – 7th. It was an opportunity for formal zazen practice in a nearly full zendo. Several Oshos attended the zazenkai and total attendance was 32 members. Gido Osho gave the dharma talk on Saturday and Seiju Osho on Sunday. These and other Oshos provided strong leadership during the zazenkai. The Rinzai-ji zen center was grateful to everyone who participated.
Our intention is to continue to provide a space for Rinzai Zen practice and, at the same time, a peaceful residence for Roshi. We are very grateful to those who provided extra monetary support. Thank you to Kigen, Seido, Sokai, Seiju and Jundo for you additional contributions.

Announcement 11/22/12
Recently the Board of Directors of Rinzai-ji has become aware of allegations posted on websites of sexual misconduct by Joshu Sasaki Roshi, the Abbott of Rinzai-ji. The Board takes allegations of inappropriateness regarding any Rinzai-ji teacher’s behavior very seriously. The Board is therefore conferring this weekend to create a plan to address this issue. We will move as quickly as possible and request your patience over the next few days as we develop a process to address these concerns.
Announcement 12/05/12
Because this is likely to be a significant and time consuming undertaking, the Rinzai-Ji Board of Directors has begun to establish interim policies and procedures to be used pending a collective determination of these issues. The first interim policy and procedure developed sets forth procedures to address complaints about conduct. This policy and the procedure for communicating concerns are located on this website by going to the Rinzai-ji tab and then to the tab Conduct Policy.

May Zazenkai 2013
The Rinzai-ji May Zazenkai was held on Sunday, May 5th. 18 students participated. Gento Osho led the group in Zazen and Kinhin, as well as giving a dharma talk and Q&A. The generous support of the Mt Baldy staff made for a crisp and smooth day of practice. Lucy the Rinzai-ji cat returned to the practice schedule, sitting in the zendo and overseeing the courtyard during Kinhin. The weather was overcast and cool in the morning, while sunny and mild in the afternoon. After the zazen-kai, there was a gathering in the tea room for homemade brownies and coffee.

Important Announcement
Rinzai-ji’s Community’s response to reports of misconduct by Joshu Sasaki Roshi
The Transitional Leadership Team and the Administrative Abbots-designate of Rinzai-ji in conjunction with the Rinzai-ji Bearing Witness Group (for more information visit www.rinzaijioshos.org) has released the following announcement in response to recent reports that the Roshi behaved inappropriately with female students, and that our community ignored or covered up this behavior.
Dear current and former members of the Rinzai-ji community,
As most of you know, reports of misconduct have been made against our teacher Joshu Sasaki Roshi concerning his behavior with female students. This issue has been made public through various media, including websites, radio, magazines and newspapers.
Members of the Rinzai-ji community met twice at Mt. Baldy Zen Center (in January and March of this year) to discuss how to best respond to these reports. A Bearing Witness Group was formed to investigate different organizations experienced in helping communities like ours deal with similar situations.
Following the recommendation of the Bearing Witness Group, we contracted with a Zen Buddhist nonprofit organization, An Olive Branch, to serve as a neutral third party to receive reports of harm. An Olive Branch will bring reports requiring resolution to the Listening Council, a group of Rinzai-ji sangha members established to respond to these reports with compassion.
The Rinzai-ji community is now inviting people who feel harmed to come forward. As neutral first receiver, An Olive Branch will:
a) Listen in confidentiality to the person reporting harm;
b) Recognize and explore potential resolution to grievances with reporters of harm;
c) Carry any request to the Listening Council for reporters of harm who wish to remain anonymous;
d) Make arrangements for individuals who wish to speak directly to the Rinzai-ji Listening Council.
The Rinzai-ji community encourages those who feel harmed to enter this process of resolution and reconciliation.
An Olive Branch can be reached in any of the following three ways:
124 Willow Ridge Rd. Sewickley, PA 15143

Dr. Harmon’s Memorial Service July 2013
Dr Harmon, Roshi’s first American supporter, passed away a few months earlier. On July 21 a memorial was held at Rinzai-ji at which his son, Martin, was able to be present along with friend Elisa. Steve Sanfield read an eulogy by Dr Macy followed by his own recollections. The Ceremony Hall was filled with guests, ordained and lay students. Roshi was present and spoke vividly of Dr Harmon. It was a very moving memorial for someone that had been so instrumental in our history.
